Since this problem seems to have been around for years, I would have though that Apple would have fixed it.

The problem started, when I apparently had some unread messages (just a guess) when I told the phone to go ahead and install the latest IOS release that it said was ready to install. So hints: If you have multiple accounts, try and narrow it down to one account that is causing the problem, disable that account and set up a new one (just on the iphone, in the ‘settings’, NOT on the e-mail server!) When I connected it and marked all messages as read, the unlucky 13 phantom messages are finally gone. So I disabled the last one and set up a new account.
